Hey there! Thanks for dropping in and welcome to Chicks on Sticks! We’re glad you’re here and quite frankly, we’re glad to be here too. We live in beautiful Wilmington, NC and our goal is to teach people how to surf. Now, you may have heard this all before because there are plenty of other surfing groups and instructors out there, but let me assure you, we’re different! Why are we different? Why, because we’re women!
We stared this business because, quite frankly, we were sick and tired of guys (boyfriends mainly) teaching us how to surf. It was frustrating. They paddled faster, they left us to fend for ourselves, and sometimes, they left us in the middle of the inlet crossing to Masonboro while the tide was swiftly sweeping us away (okay, i digress)!
So, what’s a girl to do? How do we spread the spirit of aloha to others and show them that surfing can be fun for all ages? And that is how Chicks on Sticks was born. We’re different not only because we’re women, but we’re understanding, compassionate, and enthusiastic.
We don’t care if you’re eight or eighty- if you have any interest in surfing, we want to be the ones that you call when you want to go out into the water.

Nancy (far right) walking with surf students after a lesson. Notice the grins!

I would like lessons (2 hours maybe) for myself (38 years old) and my niece (26 years old) on Sunday 08/30 – both first timers … how do I arrange that???
Jennifer,
Hello! This is Nancy. We can certainly set you up with some lessons for the 30th. We usually go out in the mornings at Wrightsville Beach. You can either reply to me on this blog or you can call me at 910-540-4112. Glad to hear that you’re interested in getting out
Nancy
I’ll have Tracy or Nancy email you. You will have a BLAST! –Katie
I would like to take a lesson for the “new thing I do in my fifties birthday’s” live here, birthday Oct 29, warm weather person though, let me know
Ok- so, I am swallowing my pride- mainly because I have now swallowed enough saltwater that my stomach hurts after my feeble attempts at surfing. I learned about 4 years ago, got a board, loved it, etc etc. But, I moved away from the beach until last year in October. This summer, I learned that surfing is not like riding a bike at all and I need all the help I can get. Any chance of scoring some lessons? I don’t want to seem like a total imposter when I say I surf. Because mostly I’m just wiping out, not surfing:)
Thank you,
Melody
I got a long board last year for my birthday and promptly broke my toe! Argh….Well, it’s a new summer and I am anxious to learn to surf. I’ve NEVER surfed before in my life, but I’ve always been pretty active, can swim, and am not afraid of the water….. We live in Wilmington so I’m pretty open with schedule etc…but I do have two young ones, so depending on when you teach, I may be limited to weekends. How do I get in contact with you?
Thanks….I’m so looking forward to this!
Elizabeth
PS. Beyond having the board, I know NOTHING about this new adventure.
Hey Elizabeth, I’m glad you found us! We certainly understand working around the schedule (and demands!) of little ones. A lot of time we set up lessons on the weekends, kind of early in the morning (8 am or so), which we can certainly do for you. When you’re interested in going out give Tracy or me a call. Tracy’s number is 799-2003 (cell is 910-231-6601) or you can call me, Nanc, at 910-540-4112.
Hi,
My name is Meagan Brown and I work in the Free Press imprint of Simon and Schuster. I’ve been reading your blog and we have a recent book that I think you would like. It is the story of a man learning to surf, but it also follows his love for his girlfriend and her journey through surfing too.
I’ve noticed you’ve done book reviews in the past so if you would be interested in reading it please let me know. It is called Kook by Peter Heller.
Thanks,
Meagan Brown
hi. possibly looking to take about 3-4 lessons to get the basics. I’m very much a beginner, and my husband took some lessons last summer and my 10 yr old son took Surfcamp this summer and I just wanted to join the group.
I’m thinking maybe I take them come August as I have family coming to visit next week.
Do you have a # and name for me to contact to arrange some lessons? Thanks for your time.
Hey Kim,
Yes, we can set something up. Give me a call when you are ready to go. I can be reached at 910-540-4112. Thanks! Nancy
